Colorado Traffic Violations

If you receive a citation for a traffic violation in Colorado, you can expect to pay a fine.  Colorado state law allows local governments to set fines at their discretion within certain parameters set forth by the Colorado state legislature. You can expect to pay higher fines in wealthier regions or major urban locations.

Colorado Points System and Suspension of Licenses

The Colorado Department of Revenue Division of Motor Vehicles, or Colorado DMV, issues points based on the type and amount of traffic violations on an individual's record. Speeding:

• 5-9 mph: 1 point
• 10-19 mph: 4 points
• 20-39 mph: 6 points
• +40 mph: 12 points
• Running a Stop Sign/Light: 4 points
• Careless Driving: 4 points
• Reckless Driving: 8 points

If you are a Juvenile Driver under 18 years old, your license can be suspended if you receive six points in a year or seven prior to reaching the age of 18. If you are between the ages of 18 and 21, you can temporarily lose your driver's license for accumulating nine points in a year, twelve points in two years, or 14 points prior to reaching 21 years old. As an adult driver, accumulating 12 points in a year or 18 in a two-year span can result in having your license suspended. While points against your Colorado driving record can expire, generally points remain on your driving record for up to seven years.

Attending Colorado Traffic School

If your driving record has too many points or you plead guilty to or are convicted of certain traffic violations, Colorado courts will mandate that you enroll in a driver improvement course. 

Colorado courts have discretion over which traffic schools are acceptable to satisfy the requirements of its driver improvement program objectives. If you would like to enroll in an online traffic school or online defensive driving program to satisfy a court-mandate, you should contact the local Colorado court to see if the online traffic school program is pre-approved. If it is not, you can still ask the court if it will allow you to enroll in your preferred Colorado online traffic school or online defensive driving program.
